Landscaping in Cypress

Cypress has grown faster than almost anywhere else in the Houston area, which means a large share of its yards are young. A newly finished house arrives with compacted subsoil, a thin layer of topsoil if any, sod laid straight onto it, a handful of small trees and a grade set by a builder for drainage approval rather than for a garden.

That inheritance is why so much work here starts underneath. Sod on compacted fill roots badly and thins within a season or two; young trees planted too deep sulk for years; and a lawn that looks acceptable in the first spring often tells a different story by the second August. Fixing the soil and the grade first is unglamorous and it is the difference between planting once and planting repeatedly.

Water is the other local fact. This is the Cypress Creek watershed, flat and clay-heavy, and the area has a well-documented history with heavy rainfall. Builder grading is set to move water off a lot to a legal point of discharge; it is not set to stop a back corner holding every time it rains. Those are different standards, and the gap between them is where most drainage work here lives.

What properties here tend to need

  • Fixing what the builder left

Compacted subsoil, minimal topsoil and sod laid straight onto it is the usual starting condition. Soil preparation and grading before planting is what stops the same work being redone in two years.

  • Drainage beyond the builder standard

A lot can meet its drainage approval and still hold water in the same corner after every storm. Correcting that is a grading and drainage job, not a sod job.

  • Establishing young trees and beds

New-build planting is mostly small stock with years of establishment ahead. Correct depth, mulch and watering in the first seasons decides what the garden looks like in five years.

  • Larger lots, so scope matters

Lots here are generally bigger than inner-Loop equivalents, which makes it worth deciding what gets designed now and what gets staged later.

FAQ

Cypress questions.

More on the full FAQ.

My new build has a terrible yard. Where do you start?

With the soil and the grade. Compacted subsoil and a builder grade are the usual causes, and planting on top of them produces the same problem again. The free Consultation & Estimate establishes what has to be corrected before anything green goes in.

My back corner floods every time it rains. Is that normal for Cypress?

It is common, and it is fixable. Builder grading is set to move water to a legal discharge point, which is a lower standard than keeping a yard usable. What it needs depends on whether the water has an outlet at all, which is what the site visit establishes.

The sod the builder laid is dying. Should I replace it?

Not before working out why. Sod laid on compacted fill roots badly, and new sod on the same ground fails the same way. Soil preparation and drainage come first, then turf.

Do you work this far northwest?

Yes. Cypress is in the service area. The published prices are the same here as everywhere else Luxury Landscaping works.
