Overview

Most Houston sprinkler systems run on a timer somebody set once. That timer does not know it rained on Tuesday, does not know it is February, and does not know the back zone drains differently to the front. It waters the same amount regardless, and you pay for all of it.

A weather-aware controller fixes the obvious part of that by skipping cycles it does not need. The less obvious part is the hardware: old spray heads throw water into the air faster than clay can absorb it, so a lot of what you are billed for runs off or evaporates before it reaches a root.

What’s included

  • Weather-based controller installation and programming
  • Rain and freeze sensors so the system skips cycles it does not need
  • Head conversion to lower-precipitation nozzles suited to clay
  • Drip conversion for beds, where spray is mostly wasted
  • Zone-by-zone run times set for what is actually planted
  • A walk through the app, so you can run the system yourself

FAQ

Smart Irrigation questions.

Is a smart sprinkler controller worth it?

It depends on what you are replacing. If your system runs a fixed schedule year-round and has no rain sensor, a weather-aware controller usually makes a visible difference to the bill. If someone already adjusts it seasonally and it has a working rain sensor, the gain is smaller and we will say so.

Does this need a licensed irrigator?

Some of it does and some of it does not, depending on what is changed. We do not hold a Texas irrigator licence, so anything that requires one is subcontracted to a licensed irrigator. We will tell you which parts of your upgrade fall into which category before the work is booked.

Can you upgrade the controller without replacing the system?

Usually yes. The controller, sensors and nozzles can often be changed while the pipework and valves stay exactly as they are.

Do I need a rain sensor in Houston?

It is one of the cheapest parts of a system and it stops the most obviously wasteful behaviour, which is watering during or just after heavy rain. For a city that gets its rain in large bursts, it earns its place.

Will I be able to work the app?

Yes. Part of the handover is running through it with you so you can adjust schedules and pause the system yourself rather than calling us to do it.
