Landscaping in Memorial
Memorial runs west from the Loop along Memorial Drive and the north side of Buffalo Bayou. It is the most heavily wooded part of inner Houston: loblolly pine and live oak over large lots, with houses set back into the canopy rather than out in front of it. Almost every landscape decision here is downstream of the trees.
Deep shade, constant pine litter and serious root competition make Memorial a difficult place to grow a conventional lawn, and an excellent place to grow almost anything else. Beds under an established canopy do well when they are planted for the light that actually reaches them and mulched to hold moisture against the roots already drawing on it. A thin, patchy lawn under pines is usually not a lawn-care failure; it is a lawn in the wrong place.
The bayou is the other factor. Lots on or near the slope have real grade change — unusual for Houston — and grade change on clay means runoff, erosion and washed-out beds after heavy rain. Retaining, regrading and drainage do more for those properties over five years than any planting will.
What properties here tend to need
Planting under an established canopy
Shade-tolerant material chosen for the light the lot actually gets, set into beds shaped around existing roots rather than cut through them.
Bed renovation instead of lawn rescue
Where turf has been failing under trees for years, converting that ground to planted bed usually produces a better-looking property and a lower maintenance bill than another round of sod.
Drainage and erosion on sloping lots
Near the bayou, water has somewhere to go and takes soil with it. Grading and drainage work is what keeps beds where they were planted.
Tree and shrub care
Pruning, feeding and shaping the material that defines these properties — the canopy is the landscape here, not the backdrop to it.

Nothing grows under my Memorial pines. Can that be fixed?
Usually, though often not by planting more grass. Shade and root competition set the limit on what will grow, so the practical answer is normally a bed redesign with shade-tolerant planting. The free Consultation & Estimate visit is the way to have someone assess the site.
Do you handle tree and shrub care in Memorial?
Yes — planting and transplanting, pruning and deadheading, weeding and mulching are all part of Gardening, published at $75/hr.
Water washes my beds out every time it rains. What can be done?
On a sloping lot the fix is in the grade and the drainage rather than the planting. That work falls under Landscaping Installation and is quoted per property once the site has been looked at.
Do you offer recurring maintenance for larger Memorial properties?
Yes. Landscaping Maintenance is published with a $100 minimum and is available on a recurring schedule, covering the property as a whole rather than the lawn alone.
