Sod Installation

A new lawn laid on ground that has been properly prepared, priced per pallet with the soil, grading, installation and clean-up included.

Price
$700 per pallet

$700 per pallet of common-variety sod, all in. That covers the material, delivery, half a yard of topsoil installed and graded level, preparing the area, the installation itself, and taking the debris away. Any soil needed beyond that half yard is $150 per yard. Specialty varieties are priced on what the nearest vendor is charging at the time. Compare every published price.

Overview

Most sod that fails in Houston was laid on ground nobody prepared. On a new build the topsoil is usually gone and what is left is compacted subsoil; on an older lot it is a low spot that holds water. Turf rolled straight onto either roots badly, thins within a season, and gets replaced by someone who then blames the grass.

The price here is per pallet and it includes the part that decides whether the lawn lives. Half a yard of topsoil goes down per pallet and is graded level before anything green arrives, the area is prepped, and the debris leaves with us. You are buying a prepared bed with a lawn on it, not a stack of turf on a driveway. Where a yard needs more soil than that to come up level, the extra is $150 per yard and we tell you the figure before ordering.

FAQ

Sod questions.

How much does sod installation cost?

Common-variety sod is $700 per pallet, and that is all in: the sod, delivery, half a yard of topsoil installed and graded level, preparing the area, the installation, and removing the debris. If the area needs more soil than that to come up level, the extra is $150 per yard. Specialty varieties depend on what the closest vendor is charging when the order is placed.

How many pallets will my yard need?

A pallet covers roughly 450 square feet. Coverage varies a little between suppliers but not by enough to change the arithmetic, so dividing your area by 450 gets you close: a 2,000 square foot lawn works out at about four and a half pallets, and since pallets come whole that is five, or $3,500. We measure properly on the free estimate visit and confirm the count before anything is ordered.

Is the soil really included?

Yes. Each pallet comes with half a yard of topsoil, installed and graded level. It is the part most quotes leave out and the part that decides whether the lawn takes. A yard that is badly out of level may need more than that, which is $150 per yard, and you get that number before anything is ordered rather than after.

What grass should I use in Houston?

St. Augustine is the default for most Houston lawns because it handles the heat and takes some shade. Bermuda and Zoysia suit sunnier, harder-wearing lots. Which one is right depends on how much sun the area actually gets, which is something to look at on site rather than decide from a catalogue.

Should I lay sod or seed?

Sod gives you a finished lawn immediately and establishes more reliably on the compacted ground common to Houston new builds. Seed is cheaper per square foot and slower, and it struggles where the soil has not been prepared. If the ground needs work either way, sod is usually the better value once that work is counted.

Do you clear what is there now?

Yes. Preparing the area and disposing of the debris are both included with delivery.
